Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], October 28: Sarvamangala 2026 marked the fifth year of its inception with the sublime theme of “Dharagni”, depicting Earth and Fire coming together in a symbiotic bond of creation.
The multiple award-winning “Bari” Durga Puja, curated by the very talented spatial designer Oiendrila Ray, took place from 17–21 October at her Ballygunge residence in Kolkata.
Sarvamangala explored the relationship between Earth (Prithvi) and Fire (Agni), using Bengal’s traditional Terracotta and Dokra crafts to express the creative elements and bring these elements into the visual interpretation of this year’s Puja decor.
The concept brought these two elements into focus through traditional craft practices. Earth represented nourishment, grounding and resilience, while Fire signified transformation, courage and purification. Through Terracotta and Dokra, the theme explored the journey from raw material to enduring form, bringing Bengal’s craft traditions into the visual interpretation of the Puja.
Talking about using these crafts as a creative medium, Creative Director Oiendrila Ray said, “We welcome the Devi each year with open hearts, carrying forward traditions that hold a special place in our lives. Sarvamangala is a celebration of Bengal’s beautiful and diverse craft heritage, and of the love and devotion that bring us together. It is also a deeply personal celebration, where friends and family come together and open their homes and hearts to everyone who joins us in welcoming the Devi.”
The five-day celebrations included traditional Puja rituals and a daily evening cultural programme featuring a Padabali Kirtan performance by Surajit Sen, a classical music performance by Srijan Chatterjee, Baul performances by renowned artist Dipannita Acharya, Garba by Bhavika Popatt, Dhunuchi Naach and a Daastan-e-Sarvamangala performance by East India Daastango. The programme brought together different forms of cultural expression as part of the celebrations.
One of the other highlights of Sarvamangala this year was the customised jewellery by home-grown label Anki Buki Aditi for Maa Durga. The jewellery pieces curated by Oiendrila were a beautiful blend of traditional jewellery form and design in modern mediums.
In its fifth year, Sarvamangala brought together Durga Puja traditions, Bengal’s craft heritage and a programme of cultural performances, highlighting the richness of Bengal’s heritage.
